Our Practices
No-Till. No-Spray. No-Nonsense Farming. Our holistic practices rely solely on soil health and natural competition to manage pests and disease. With these practices, we define ourselves as “Beyond Organic”, as we are employing methods far more sustainable than those of certified organic farms.
No-till: Building Soil to Grow Healthy Plants
Starting in 2009, BADSEED is minimizing its disruption of the natural ecology of the soil with mechanical implements so common in both conventional and organic agriculture like tillers, plows, and harrows. Whenever possible, we use deep mulching with straw and leaves to manage weeds and create healthy soil structure. In doing so, we will join a very few vegetable growers internationally who employ such practices on a commercial scale.
No-spray: Using Habitat to Prevent Pests and Disease.
BADSEED does not spray any substance on our plants to kill pests or disease. Instead, we promote competition with pests and disease by creating a habitat that harbors beneficial insects, animals, bacteria and fungi. Fungicides and pesticides (whether organic or conventional) destroy the very diversity that we attempt to create. We employ extensive companion planting and crop diversity as part of this effort.
No-Nonsense: Growing Towards a Sustainable Life
Whether you want to call it organic, permaculture, no-till, or anything else, our primary responsibility as farmers is to nature. We base all of our practices on their long-term sustainability, and we are moving all of our systems in that direction. We welcome our customers to come out and see for themselves each plant, each animal, and each element that composes our farm.
